South Tyrol is something of a hybrid, a swathe of land between the cultures and the regions of the north and the south of Italy. Is South Tyrol German? Is it Italian? The answer is, it is Italian, but enjoys autonomy.
South Tyrol is situated in the mountains but relies heavily on pomi- and viticulture. Most people in the region speak German, but have adopted traits of the Mediterranean imperturbability. They know when to work and when to celebrate. Pleasant people that are worth visiting. |

The landscape is as versatile as its people. The majestic Alps with their green valleys dominate the picture, but the vast Etsch Valley with its big areas under crops tends to remind one of the pre-Alpine region. Lake Kalterer on the extreme southern tip of South Tyrol supports this impression.
Bolzano, the provincial capital, as much worth a visit as Merano, both town sporting an impressive variety of cultural activities. |

South Tyrol is a changing area that is characterised by the tense relationship between conservatism and modern spirit. While on the mountain pasture you may think that you have just entered the Middle Ages, the larger towns profit from industrial sectors which integrate well into the natural scenery.
This consuetudinary region offers something for every age group. Unhurried hiking or sportive mountain biking, extremely challenging ski-runs or relaxing cross-country skiing.
